Broad Jump Test & Average by Sex
The standing long jump — or broad jump — measures explosive leg power: how far you can leap forward from a standstill. Measure your distance and see how it rates for adult men and women.
How to do the test
Jump forward from a standstill, landing on both feet; measure from the line to the back of your heels.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good standing long jump?
On the adult scale, an average broad jump is about 221–230 cm (7'3"–7'6") for men and 171–180 cm (5'7"–5'11") for women; excellent is over 250 cm (8'2") for men and over 200 cm (6'6") for women. Athletes jump considerably farther.
How do you do the standing long jump test?
Stand with your toes behind a line, feet shoulder-width apart. Swing your arms and bend your knees, then jump forward as far as you can, landing on both feet. Measure from the take-off line to the back of your heels. Take the best of three attempts.
What does the broad jump measure?
Explosive lower-body power — the same quality as the vertical jump, expressed horizontally. It's widely used in sports combines (including the NFL Combine). These ratings are a widely-used fitness-testing reference for adults, not a peer-reviewed clinical norm.
